REGIONAL AGENCIES LAUNCH CENTRAL INDIANA TRAVEL SURVEY

Responses will help guide investments in the transportation system

INDIANAPOLIS – Households across Central Indiana are being asked to take part in the Hoosier Travel Counts household travel survey. The survey will help transportation planners better understand how people get around the region. A randomly selected group of households will receive postcards with instructions on how to participate.

The information collected will help shape future transportation investments. City and regional planners use the results to recommend improvements for roads, sidewalks, trails, bike lanes, and transit systems. Household travel surveys are one of the most important tools for transportation planning. They provide detailed insights into how, when, and why people travel—data that can’t be captured through traffic counts alone. This helps design systems that reflect real-world needs, improve safety, and support economic growth. The data also supports long-term planning for air quality, land use, and infrastructure funding.

"Understanding how people move through our region is the foundation of smart, equitable transportation planning,“ stated Anna Gremling, Executive Director, Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization. “The Hoosier Travel Counts survey will provide the data we need to make informed decisions and plan for future growth. We’re asking residents to participate because their input directly shapes the investments that will serve our communities for decades to come."

The project is a partnership between the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Heartland MPO (also known as the Madison County Council of Governments - MCCOG). The last surveys were done in 2008 and 2014—since then, travel habits have changed a lot. This new survey will help update the region’s data and planning efforts.

“The Hoosier Travel Counts household travel survey provides invaluable insights into travel behavior that we cannot obtain from any other source," said Jerry Bridges, Executive Director, Heartland Metropolitan Planning Organization. “Once the survey is complete, we will pair these insights with comments and stories from public meetings to better understand people's transportation challenges, melding data and anecdotes for a more complete picture of daily transportation.”

Over 1,500 households completed the survey during the spring session. The IMPO and MCCOG are planning to receive 5,700 complete surveys by Thanksgiving. Households who receive the postcard can complete the survey by visiting https://hoosiertravelcounts.com. The survey can also be completed by downloading the rMove™ app from the App Store or Google Play, or by calling 1-888-828-0870. All participants will receive a gift card as a thank you for their time.
